Happy Independence Day

Today as we celebrate our 67th Indian independence day, lets not forget the spirit of independence and those who happily laid their lives for our country so that we may breathe freely and not as “slave”. The true spirit of independence is to free our nation from corruption, poverty , economic inequality etc and not to forget let’s make and build India towards self sufficiency and self reliance.

India is just not “geographical expression” but is a country held together, in the words of its first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, “by strong but invisible threads….

Indian’s have emerged and shaped distinctively and remarkably over centuries, from ancient Hindu, culture, impact of Islam & Christianity and two centuries of British colonial rule and what has held together is those strong invisible threads….

Let us make and build India a better place to live.

Happy Independence Day

The NSA Will Replace Most of Their Potential Snowdens with Machines

The NSA will eliminate 90 percent of the system administrators who maintain the agency’s networks, according to the agency’s director Keith Alexander. Speaking on Thursday to a cybersecurity conference, the NSA chief said that most of the current work done by staff and contractor system administrators — Snowden’s old job — could be replicated by automated technology.

“We’ve put people in the loop of transferring data, securing networks and doing things that machines are probably better at doing,” Alexander said according to Reuters, adding, “What we’re in the process of doing — not fast enough — is reducing our system administrators by about 90 percent.” The change, he argues, will make their networks more secure, more defensible, and faster. According to Alexander, the agency started down that path before Snowden’s leaks, but have made it a higher priority in recent months. The director never mentioned Snowden’s name, but the whistleblower was clearly part of the subject at hand. According to the Huffington Post, who attended the conference of about 300 (including the heads of the FBI and CIA), Alexander added:

“We trust people with data. At the end of the day it’s all about trust. And people who have access to data as part of their missions, if they misuse that trust they can cause huge damage.”

System administrations are already under tighter scrutiny at the agency, with new restrictions in place on the use of thumb drives (which is presumably how Snowden snagged the documents he leaked), and a mandatory “buddy system” when one administrator needs to access sensitive data.

So, what’s the new, automated Snowden replacement? Alexander was short on details, but mentioned that the new technology designed to replace system administrators would resemble a “thin virtual cloud structure.”

NSA Project XKeyscore Collects Nearly Everything You Do On The Internet

Further leaks have revealed an NSA project called XKeyscore that, with a few keystrokes, can give a data analyst access to nearly everything a user does on the Internet – from chat sessions to email to browsing habits.

The system requires an email because many behaviors online are completely anonymous and it is only via some sort of identifier — a username and domain — that the system can scour the database of collected Internet traffic and metadata.

As Snowden said to the Guardian on June 10, “I, sitting at my desk could wiretap anyone, from you or your accountant, to a federal judge or even the president, if I had a personal email.” XKeyscore is how it is done.

The system is available to NSA analysts and can be accessed without a warrant. According to training manuals produced in 2010, the system requires analysts to request data on certain individuals. The system then scans traffic beginning and terminating in the United States using keyword searches. The system can also search Facebook comments, as well as other social media data.

The data is not permanent. Because the system gathers billions of records a day, the database can store it for at most a few days. The NSA claims that these searches, which can pinpoint communications between people online and over the phone and find mention of certain terms and names in blog posts, emails, and other shared content, are completely audited and are aimed at overseas targets — although American nationals are often swept in during the intelligence gathering.

“XKeyscore is used as a part of NSA’s lawful foreign signals intelligence collection system,” said the NSA to the Guardian. “Allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true.”

Syrian Hackers Compromise White House Staffers’ Personal Email Accounts

The phishing attempt throws some interesting security details of the Obama administration’s social media management into focus.

Matthew Keys, the former social media editor of Reuters who is said to have helped members of Anonymous hack the Los Angeles Times, is claiming that the personal email accounts of three White House officials have been compromised by pro-Assad hackers from Syria.

Erin Lindsay, Macon Phillips, and Adam Garber’s Google Mail accounts were all phished, says Keys, and it was only a fourth White House staffer who alerted them to the danger. The attempted attack, however, shows how seriously the White House guards the security of its social media accounts: Passwords for the official accounts, which include a Tumblr feed and some varied Instagram presence, seem to be changed on a daily basis.

One of the Syrian Electronic Army hackers described the experience to Keys’s blog The Desk like this: “They really were lucky. It was (a) really great experience, having a try to hack the White House. And somehow it succeeded and it failed at the same time.” Perhaps Free Syria hackers will compromise the Instagram account of the country’s President, Bashar Al-Assad.

The Syrian Electronic Army is also said to have hacked into Reuters’s Twitter feed in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The news agency’s Twitter feed was, of course, part of Keys’ fiefdom when he worked there.
